The problem: Preparation and implementation of software for conveyor systems in Amazon logistics center in Gliwice

The solution

Preparing software that meets current standards

The project involved creating a control system for the transport and sorting lines in the Amazon logistics center in Gliwice. The system of conveyors and sorters, over 8km long, was supplied by Vanderlande. After receiving the data on capability of each system, computer programmers proceeded to prepare control programs based on Amazon's standard. The next stage was to prepare communication with the Mercury superior system that manages the flow of goods in the logistics center.

The prepared software has been tested using Emulate3D tools and the master system simulator. Emulate3D enables the so-called ‘virtual commissioning’, i.e. simulation of the designed control system and carrying out thorough tests in real time. This allowed to significantly reduce the time of system start-up at the facility.

The project also involved preparing a safety system including over 600 elements. All systems were visualised on the basis of the Ignition SCADA platform. The visualization was prepared by SIT company.

In addition to the implementation of the prepared PLC programs, the work at the facility also included the configuration of individual components of the Profinet network, parameterization of inverters and configuration and setting of barcode reading cameras, which are used to identify packages.

After the launch was completed, the client began testing transport, security and SCADA systems. The tests showed that all systems are stable and meet the design requirements. The required capacity of 30,000 packages per hour was achieved and the systems were accepted by the client. After that few weeks of production supervision began.

Benefits

The goal of the project has been achieved - the client received a reliable and high-performance system.

Fun fact

  • This is only one of our 20 or so projects for Amazon in Europe. Currently three more logistics centres that use our systems are in the process of launching. They are based on 1517F-3 PN/DP controllers from the latest Siemens series.

Technologies used

  • Siemens 319F-3 PN/DP PLC controller

  • Profinet Network

  • AS-Interface network

  • SICK cameras
  • SEW and EATON inverters
  • Visualization based on Ignition SCADA
